Gertrude Hadley Jeannette's first day on the job was a bit more memorable than the average. She was New York City's first female driver, you see. The city's first black female driver, to be exact! She insists that it made a writer out of her. Today, she is still being recognized and honored for her work by organizations like the Coalition of Theatres of Color.
